Visakhapatnam: Employees of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) have called for a two-day bandh from Monday. For two days, employees will organize bike rallies and protests against the strategic divestment of RINL-VSP.

On Monday, Visakhapatnam Ukku Parirakshana Porata committee and other unions blocked Maddilapalem junction road and Ukku Nagaram junction. They blocked vehicle traffic for a few hours.

The protests escalated after Union Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh told Lok Sabha that the Center had decided to privatize the Visakhapatnam steel plant after carefully assessing its financial condition and operation. The minister was answering questions from YSRC MP Margani Bharat and TDP MPs K Rammohan Naidu and Kesineni Nani in Lok Sabha.

According to union leaders, the Center has invited applications from asset appraisers. The government has set April 3 as the deadline. The selection should be made on April 5. Later, appraisers will visit the steel mill to assess the value of the business. The union leaders even decided to block their way and not allow the team to visit the steelworks.
