The official start list for the first Critérium du Giro d’Italia was announced today by the organizers RCS Sport at the Italy Pavilion of Expo 2020 Dubai. Defending Giro d’Italia champion Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) attended a press conference on Friday a day before the inaugural race.

The criterium of the Giro d’Italia will take place in Dubai as a 30-lap race organized on a circuit of 2.1 kilometers, the course forming the shape of the symbol “Amore Infinito” of the Giro d’Italia used to inspire the trophy of the Grand Stage race of the Tour. The maglia rosa signature was featured for a 90th time last year, won by Bernal after 3,479.9 kilometers of racing and just one minute 29 seconds ahead of Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) who finished second overall. .

“This is my first time coming to Dubai and tomorrow I really want to have fun on the Giro d’Italia Criterium and wear the Maglia Rosa that I won this year again,” Bernal said at the conference Press.

“Winning the Giro d’Italia is one of the best moments of my career so far. Since I was young, I want to do the Giro. I lived for two years in Italy and I really like Italian and Italians. This year I finally had the opportunity and was incredibly happy to win. It gave me a lot of confidence after a difficult time following my victory in the Tour de France.

Three more riders taking the start on Saturday provided a glimpse into the one-day race – 2021 Giro points classification winner Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), six-time Giro stage winner and counter world champion -the Filippo Ganna watch (Ineos Grenadiers) and nine -times stage winner of the Grand Tour Elia Viviani (Cofidis).

“Wearing the Maglia Rosa to the Giro was a unique experience. I also won my first road stage at the Giro d’Italia 2020, such an incredible feeling, ”said Ganna, who raced to support his teammate Bernal last year.

“It’s great to be an Italian rider on the Giro with the fans who recognize you and call you along the road. Tomorrow will be a first for the Giro and for many riders: we are in a special place and it will be spectacular. It’s great to be here with so many great champions.

Peter Sagan added a stage 10 sprint victory to his record last year, the second year in a row he has won a Grand Tour of Italy stage.

“The Giro d’Italia is special. I lived in Italy for 5 years and for me Italy is my second home. Last year I finally took part in the Giro d’Italia for the first time and it was wonderful. I wanted to do it again and I came back this year and managed to win the Maglia Ciclamino. I am very happy to be back in Dubai after running the very first Dubai Tour: tomorrow I will do my best, it will certainly be an interesting race!

RCS Sport unveiled two days ago the opening of the three days of competition for the 2022 edition of the Giro, with for the first time the Grande Partenza in Budapest, Hungary. Organizers plan to announce details of the full three weeks of racing with daily installments over the next week.

“It is a real honor for me to be at the Italian pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. I have fond memories of Dubai. I have been to Dubai many times and it is amazing how cycling has developed as a sport and how many cycling enthusiasts, of all ages, are active in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, ”said Viviani , who won the points classification at the 2019 UAE tour.

“We did a tour this morning with so many people, 30,000! It was a great experience and I was so happy to see so many people riding bikes. Tomorrow will be a fast race in a special place: I can’t wait to participate in the Critérium du Giro d’Italia.

Among the other riders on the starting line on Saturday, the winner of the Giro d’Italia mountain classification this year, Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën Team), winner of the Monte Zoncolan stage of the Giro d’Italia 2021 Lorenzo Fortunato (EOLO -Kometa), winner of stage 2 of the Tour de Luxembourg 2021 Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates), Olympic gold medalist in team pursuit Simone Consonni (Cofidis) and Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ), who became the first Hungarian to wear the maglia rosa with his stage 6 climbing prowess this year at the top of San Giacomo.

A total of 192 countries are participating in Expo 2020, and it is the largest event ever to be held in the Arab world, according to organizers. The criterium is one of hundreds of live events organized over six months to celebrate innovation and world cultures, from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
