Danilo Petrucci has revealed that he is considering an alternative offer from Ducati to compete in the MotoAmerica Championship, a move that would end his aspirations to try the Dakar Rally with KTM.
The Italian is preparing for the final three rounds of his immediate MotoGP career after losing his seat with the Tech 3 KTM team, nine years after making his debut on the Ioda Racing CRT motorcycle.
Despite the controversial manner in which he lost his vehicle, finding it out via a notification on the Global TV stream during the Styrian MotoGP FP3 session, Petrucci had indicated that he was in talks to stay in KTM’s fold with a view to s’ train for exhausting 2023. Dakar Rally.
However, he has now revealed that he has an offer to compete in the US-based MotoAmerica Series with the HSBK Ducati team, a move that would see him leave KTM and end his Dakar aspirations.
“It’s an idea,” he told reporters during the Emilia-Romagna MotoGP in Misano. “I have to talk to KTM first, because we already have a long-term project and in the end MotoAmerica excludes Dakar and vice versa. So I’m going to have to make a decision.
“On the one hand there is Dakar, on the other MotoAmerica, which would lead me to change my life and live in another country. Make the sure thing or I do the other, since both projects are backed by manufacturers, so I can’t walk around in an orange and red shirt. So we’ll see what happens.
Ducati is currently looking for a top-level replacement for WorldSBK race winner Loris Baz, who placed fourth overall with the HSBK team in 2021. Petrucci has a close relationship with Ducati after securing two victories during a six-season stint with the manufacturer in MotoGP, although he is left in a cloud after learning ahead of the 2020 season that he would be abandoned at the end of the year.
He indicated an interest in the WorldSBK Championship but decided not to do so after failing to secure the factory team spot he sought.
