Thousands to take part in Long Beach Marathon events this weekend – Press Telegram

Thousands of people will travel to Long Beach this weekend for a series of running and cycling events as the city’s annual marathon returns for the first time since 2019.

The 37th Long Beach Marathon will be significantly smaller than the 2019 edition, but the presence of 10,000 people planning to attend the popular event of the series is a reason to support it even after the virtualization of the 2020 iteration. From the coronavirus pandemic.

“This will be the first long beach marathon in 727 days,” spokesperson Dunkles said on Thursday, October 7. I couldn’t be more excited to come back live. “

The main event is the 26.2 Mile Long Beach Marathon and Half Marathon, which will take you east on the Beach Bike Trail on Sunday, October 10, around the Belmont Coast. On the shore, half marathon runners and walkers return downtown via Ocean Boulevard, full marathon athletes visit California State University’s Long Beach campus to the north and return to Ocean Boulevard for the final miles.

Many routes are on the streets and need to be closed, mainly in the eastern part of Long Beach. Marathon officials have warned that it will be difficult to enter and exit the neighborhood along the route from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

However, the weekend events actually start at noon on Friday – the Health and Fitness Expo.

The only place where participants can receive race bibs and packages, the exhibit will be held in the ground parking tent at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in accordance with COVID-19 regulations. The opening hours are Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday’s flagship event is the Aquarium of the Pacific 5K. The walk begins and ends next to the iconic fountain in front of the aquarium. The collection of the 5K bibs will not start until 5:30 a.m. on site and will start at 7 a.m.

The course winds around the waterfront before returning to the aquarium, where you can immerse yourself in the aquarium itself. Shirts, medals and reduced entry to the aquarium will be awarded to graduates.

But most of the action takes place on Sunday.

Marathons, half-marathons and 20-mile bike rides all start early Sunday mornings on Shoreline Drive, near the intersection with Shoreline Village Drive.

Marathon Sunday starts at 6 a.m., with a full marathon and 32 km bike tour. Bikes depart from Shoreline Drive and Linden Avenue. Marathon runners start at the intersection of Shoreline Village Drive and Shoreline Drive. The half marathon also starts at 7 a.m. on Shoreline Village Drive.

“It will be a little different this year,” said Cruz. “Navigate part of the infrastructure of the recent Grand Prix.

“I adjusted the start to give it a little more room,” he added. “We have moved the start of the half marathon from 30 minutes to 7 am. It will be a rolling start, but no one will start until they cross the line.

Complete proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test is required to receive bibs and packages for all events. Masks are recommended before the start of Expo Santé and all races, but are not mandatory on the course.

The marathon and bike tours are sold out, but you can register for a half marathon or 5 km at Expo Santé. The cost is $ 150 for a half marathon and $ 65 for a 5K.

The bike rides have no time limit.

Meanwhile, marathon and half-marathon runners are categorized as paddocks, with faster runners up front and more relaxed participants in the back, Cruz said. Runners will receive timing chips in the race package, so as Cruz said, individual times will not start until participants cross the official start line.

Parking 8,000 runners and cyclists (most of whom try to start at 6 a.m.) can be a problem, Cruz said. You can park your car in the congress center garage on a first come, first served basis. It costs $ 15 and is accessible from Avenue des Pins. There is also a drop-off point for runners at 448 E. Ocean Blvd.

The routes along the course will resume when the last runner or walker passes. Marathon runners must complete the course in seven and a half hours. When this deadline is reached, the marathoners remaining on the course will be asked to stop or resume. Participants in the half marathon have a time limit of 6 hours.

There are also virtual marathons and half marathons for those who are not yet crowded. Virtual entrants must pay the same fees, prove they have covered the distance by Tuesday, October 12, and earn a finisher medal.

“That’s a total of around 10,000 people at each event,” says Cruz. “It’s certainly depressed by recent events, but much more so than last year.”
